My New Project: My Weekly Adventure

I have three wonderful kids and I also suffer from the same issue that most people do today - I think I need 36 hours in a day to do everything I want to do. This can result in me not taking time to spend quality time with my kids. Quality means that you are fully present with everything they do and give them your 100% full attention. When is the last time you did that? This was my motivation to start MyWeeklyAdventure.com and I am really excited about this!

Where did this site come from?

Over the past few months I have been on this big kick of getting organized and making lists of things. One of things I wanted to do was make sure that I did cool things with my kids. So I decided to poll some of my friends about things to do with kids in Portland. I came up with a list of about 35-40 things that were pretty cool but not much has really happened with that list over the past 2 months.

A good friend of mine, Gene Kim (@realgenekim), recently had twins (actually his wife @kimfampdx did most of the work) and they also have a 2 year old. Gene took off some time after the twins where born. When he came back we were chatting and he mentioned that he is really enjoying the time off and one of things he does every week is take his two year old on an adventure. That stuck with me more than he would have ever realized.

I really wanted to make sure that I made a minimum commitment to take my kids on at least one adventure a week. Memories are the best part of kids and you only get one shot at each stage of their lives. So I combined this personal challenge with the idea that there are tons of cool things to do in Portland (and every other city) I just needed to find the good ones and get out there.

The other thing I should mention that this site is about community.  If some site gives me a list of things to do in Portland - that is alright - but I really want to know what real people are doing that have kids like me.  More importantly to me is what my friends are doing.

What is the objective?

To motivate parents to create memories with their kids.

How does the site work?

The site is simple. You take your kids on an adventure each week and you share it on the site.

This does two things:

  1. Allows other people to find cool things to do in your city.
  2. Motivates you to spending time with your kids.

Want To Particiapte?

If you want to participate, I would love to have you as part of the site. I just launched this and am working out the kinks. I have not created an open registration yet but if you would like to play please contact me and I will get you set up. There are about a dozen people signed up already and more growing every day. Every parent that have have tested this idea on has absolutely loved the idea and has found a need for something like this. For the moment I have only focused on getting this up and running in Portland but many of my friends are in other parts of the country.

What's next?

This is step 1. There are some cool things that are in the background that will make this the user experience I am aiming for in the long run. If you have some programing skills and want to help out with the site I would love to chat. You can contact me on this site or on my twitter account.

PLEASE share this on your Facebook page, follow us  on Twitter, retweet it, subscribe to the RSS, email it to friends whatever and more importantly give me some FEEDBACK! Like it? Love it? Hate it? Please let me know and either way give me some details so I can continue to make it better. I very much appreciate everyone that has helped me and supported this effort.
